for fishermen: DMK cadres observing a fast in Puducherry on Saturday. PUDUCHERRY: Activists belonging to the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) on Saturday observed a dawn-to-dusk fast in Puducherry and Karaikal to protest the recurring attacks by the Sri Lankan Navy against the fishermen of Tamil Nadu. Led by convener of the territorial unit of the DMK R.V. Janakiraman, legislators, representatives of civic bodies and functionaries of different wings of the party took part in the protest staged near the Nehru statue. In Karaikal, the fast was led by Leader of the Opposition in the Puducherry Assembly A.M.H. Nazeem. Leaders and functionaries of the DMK who spoke, referred to the travails of Tamil Nadu fishermen who had been harassed by the Sri Lankan Navy across the Palk Strait. They called upon the Centre to take steps to protect the fishing rights of the fishermen around Katchatheevu.
