CHAMARAJANAGAR: Renowned agriculture scientist M. Mahadevappa has stressed the need to open an agriculture college in the backward district of Chamarajanagar, to facilitate the farmers of the region. Speaking at the inaugural function of KVK building at Haradanahalli near here on Saturday, he said that Chamarajanagar has rich bio-diversity and a favourable environment. He acknowledged that the farmers in the district grew a variety of crops. He said the Government of India had extensively utilised his experience in the field of agriculture research and that he was ready to extend his service to the State. He said being a chairman of the task force, Department of Bio-Technology, Government of India, he would be able to allocate Rs.10 lakh to Rs. 1.50 crore for the agriculture development projects in the State. He said Rs. 33 crore has been released to the State so far. Though farmers extensively used chemical fertilizers during the period of the green revolution, to increase food production, they did the mistake of forgetting utilisation of organic fertilizers to ensure soil fertility. He stressed the need to continue the traditional way of procuring native foodgrain seeds. He said the first KVK centre was opened in Pondicherry in 1986.
