NEW DELHI: All stadiums in the Capital would be upgraded ahead of the Commonwealth Games in 2010, said Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Saturday while laying the foundation stone for upgrading work at Shivaji Stadium. The Chief Minister said that to meet the requirements of international standards submitted by the Commonwealth Games Federation and the international consultant M/s EKS, the New Delhi Municipal Council has decided to upgrade Shivaji Stadium to begin with. This stadium would be the training venue for the hockey event at the Commonwealth Games. The upgraded stadium will have four storeys in addition to a two-level basement parking. It will be constructed in an area of 197,000 square metres which will include the main Sports Facility Block with a seating capacity of 9,000 spectators on the ground floor. The other facilities at the stadium would be a hockey warm-up pitch, housing lounges, dormitories, physio-therapy massage room, first-aid medical room, dope testing room, Press Room and changing rooms. The upgrading work has been awarded to China Railway Shisiju Group Corporation. The project will be completed by December next year at an estimated cost of Rs.160.27 crore. The gathering was informed that the demolition of the existing structure has been completed. Raja Aederi Consultant Pvt. Ltd. has been appointed as an architect consultant for the project.
