Condemns party members’ arrest at midnight Plans campaign to counter Congress ‘propaganda’ THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Communist Party of India (CPI) State secretary Veliyam Bhargavan has said that certain ‘invisible forces’ are behind the Opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) campaign against the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government. Briefing reporters about the deliberations of the CPI State council meeting here on Saturday, Mr. Bhargavan said this was a serious matter deserving investigation. The Congress had all along taken the company of religious and communal fanatics to attack Left governments in the State and the present campaign over the content of the Class VII Social Science textbook was no different, he said. Pointing out that the government had decided to alter the content of the controversial lesson on the basis of recommendations from an experts’ committee and after consultations with all sections concerned, the CPI leader urged the UDF leadership to call off their agitation over the issue. There was nothing wrong with the content of the textbook. Still, the government had brought about changes in it in the light of criticism from different sections, he said and added in reply to question that he did not think that Education Minister M. A. Baby had invited trouble for the government. Mr. Bhargavan came down heavily on the midnight arrest of party activists by the police in different parts of the State over the last few weeks, but refused to see any political strategy behind such incidents. New council members The CPI State council, held here on Friday, picked V.S. Sunil Kumar, MLA, Mathew Varghese and P. P. Suneer to fill the vacancies in the council and V. P. Unnikrishnan to fill the vacancy in the State executive committee.
