Better pay for overhead tank operators sought

Special Correspondent

CUDDALORE: The Tamil Nadu Rural Development Officials’ Union has urged the State government to pay a monthly salary of at least Rs. 2,500 to overhead tank operators and sanitary workers in the panchayats. The union, at its executive committee meeting held here on Saturday, adopted a resolution. G. Suryamurthy, State president of Tamil Nadu Government Officials’ Union, was in the chair

The union said that at present the overhead tank operators were paid Rs. 600 a month and for every additional tank Rs. 250 with a maximum of three tanks. The union wanted the ceiling on the number of tanks to be operated by a person to be lifted.

Through another resolution, the union said that though panchayat assistants and part-time clerks in panchayats were doing the same kind of works such as tax collection, maintenance of accounts, money management, etc., they were paid differential wages .

The union urged the government to remove the anomaly and fix equal wages with a basic of Rs. 2,650 for both categories. It also called for absorption of Junior Assistants temporarily appointed on a consolidated pay of Rs. 4,000 into the Rural Development Department.

It sought timescale pay for all computer operators engaged by the District Rural Development Agency, panchayat unions and under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme.

Through another resolution, the union said that since the posts of Extension Officer (animal husbandry and cooperative) were abolished, the supervisory works under the rural self-employment scheme were affected. Hence, to remove any hiccups in its implementation, the union called for creation posts in the rank of Deputy Block Development Officer.

N. Sankarakumar, State president of the union, participated. K. Venkataramanaraj, retired Block Development Officer, Panruti, and V. Loganan, Deputy BDO, were felicitated for their good works.
