PDS rice seized

COIMBATORE: Ten tonnes of PDS rice, being smuggled to Kerala, have been seized from a lorry at Madathukulam in the district early Saturday, the police said.

Based on a tip-off that ration rice was being taken to Kerala, officials kept vigil in the areas around Pollachi which is bordering Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

When the driver did not stop, they gave chase and intercepted the vehicle around 3.30 a.m. near Madathukulam, about 80 km from here.

However, the driver and cleaner managed to escape, after abandoning the lorry, official sources said.

Officials found 200 bags, each containing 50 kg of rice, in the vehicle. The value of the seized rice and lorry is said to be around Rs.6.50 lakh, they said. —PTI
