New approach: C.N.R. Rao, left, National Research Professor, receiving the Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) from R. Sethuraman, Vice-Chancellor, SASTRA University, Thanjvaur, on Saturday. THANJAVUR: Inter-disciplinary approach is very important for science and engineering said Prof. C.N.R. Rao, Honorary President and Linus Pauling Research Professor of Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Research here on Saturday. Delivering the 22nd convocation address at Shanmugha Arts Science Technology and Research Academy (SASTRA) University here, Prof. Rao said that “life itself is inter-disciplinary.” Inter-disciplinary programmes like material science and engineering can be offered by Universities. He said unlike in the fifties (1951) when he graduated, when students were not knowing anything about future, now opportunities are more for young graduates. Five new Indian Institutes of Science, seven Indian Institutes of Technologies have come up and if the faculty demand for all these premier institutes in the country is taken into consideration it will be 10,000. It is not known whether we will get so much of faculty to fill up. Youth should use this opportunity and work towards filling this demand. “You should dream big. Money is not important. Many youth in Bangalore walk in the streets with suitcases and money. But they don’t have brains. Try to do something worthwhile. Achieve great things,” Rao advised the young graduates. He said that Science is a route to immortality and spirituality. Youth should climb up the limitless ladders of excellence offered by science. He called for perseverance, tenacity and doggedness besides intelligence. He asked the students not to forget our tradition. Tradition is important for science also. Prof. Rao was conferred with Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) at the convocation by the University. The Vice-Chancellor, SASTRA University R. Sethuraman conferred the doctorate on him in appreciation of his total commitment to research and contribution for the development of science and technology in the country. Dr. Sethuraman said that SASTRA will start material science courses as suggested by Mr. Rao. Prof. Rao later awarded degrees to graduates of the year 2007-2008.
