‘State has failed to utilise Central funds’

Correspondent

KOLAR: The State Government has failed to utilise Central funds for implementing welfare schemes, Varthur Prakash, MLA and chairman of the Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Sewerage Board, has said.

He was speaking at the inauguration of Bharat Nirman Public Information Campaign organised at Mulbagal in Kolar district on Saturday.

Mulbagal MLA Amaresh, who inaugurated the five-day programme, called upon people to avail themselves of welfare schemes.

Zilla panchayat president A.C. Nagarathna presided. Deputy Commissioner H.R. Srinivas and zilla panchayat Chief Executive Officer F.R. Jamadar were present.

Criticism

The inaugural session turned out to be a forum for people’s representatives and bureaucrats to criticise each other.

Mr. Jamadar underlined the role of elected representatives in creating awareness about the benefits of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme.

Ms. Nagarathna said people’s representatives were ready to cooperate in implementing the programmes, but officials should be diligent. She decried a remark made allegedly by MLA Varthur Prakash, “insulting women.” Union Minister of State for Road Transport and Shipping K.H. Muniyappa and Union Minister of Labour and Employment Oscar Fernandes did not turn up for the function.
