COIMBATORE: As farmers are getting ready for sowing their Adi Pattam crops, the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University has said the major crops grown during the season are cereals, oil seeds and vegetables. The Domestic and Export Market Intelligence Cell (DEMIC) of the university has come up with suggestions to farmers regarding the crops and combination of crops to plant during the Adi Pattam, and also the price forecast. It has given special forecasts for maize, gingelly and groundnut. According to trade sources, 2.5 lakh tonnes of maize is produced in Tamil Nadu. It is grown mainly in Perambular, Dindigul, Coimbatore, Salem, Erode and Virudhunagar districts, which together share 77.1 per cent of total area under the crop in the State. The price is expected to rule around Rs. 99 a quintal for the months July to September. Sowing is progressing in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. New crop arrivals will hit the market from September and prices after that are expected to decrease and rule steady. Gingelly, which is grown as a rainfed crop in India, has crop duration for three to four months. In Tamil Nadu, Erode, Thanjavur, Villupuram, Karur and Tuticorin districts account for 60 per cent of the total area under this crop. Arrivals of gingelly in local markets had come down due to unexpected rainfall during the harvest months. Price in March was Rs. 52 a kg for the black variety, while it was Rs. 55 a kg for the red variety. The price was 43 per cent higher than the previous year. After some time the prices are expected to reduce and rule firm with new arrivals coming into the market. Thiruvannamalai, Villupuram, Vellore, Erode, Kancheepuram, Namakkal and Thiruvallur are the major groundnut producing districts making up for 50 per cent of the total State output. The peak arrival time in the State is October to November and February to May. The price of groundnut pod and kernels has increased during the January-May period. But, the Adi Pattam arrivals are expected to stabilise the price of groundnut in all markets. The anticipated price during harvest of the above crops as analysed by the team consisting of N. Raveendaran, Professor and Project Co-ordinator of DEMIC, P. Padmavathy, D. Murugananthi and D. Sri Akila, is: Maize to cost Rs. 725 to Rs. 850 a quintal from October to December; gingelly to cost Rs. 44 to Rs. 47 a kg during the same period, and groundnut to cost Rs. 27 to Rs. 28 a kg of pods during August to December. Based on these prices, farmers are advised by the DEMIC to take up sowing.
