Official tenders apology

Staff Reporter

MADURAI: The District Manager of Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation Limited (TASMAC) here has tendered an unconditional apology before the Madras High Court Bench here for his predecessor having furnished wrong information on the existence of a temple at Sholavandan near here.

A Division Bench of Justice Elipe Dharma Rao and Justice M. Venugopal closed a public interest litigation petition after recording his apology and also an undertaking that there was no proposal to establish a liquor shop close to Vattapillayar Temple, which was evicted in 2005 and subsequently revived.

In his affidavit, the district manager, S. Pandian, said that he assumed office only on May 21. His predecessor, S. Nagarajan, had misinformed the court that the temple was not in existence on the basis of a wrong report given to him by the Executive officer of Sholavandan panchayat union.

Irked over such misleading information, the Court had issued a notice to the District Manager to reply as to why action should not be taken against the officer. In his reply, Mr. Pandian said: “The information submitted by my predecessor was based on a bonafide belief as to the genuineness of the letter given by the Executive Officer and there was absolutely no intention for furnishing wrong information.”

The PIL was filed by a villager claiming that the Corporation was planning to establish the liquor shop near the temple which falls within a prohibited distance stipulated in the Tamil Nadu Liquor Retail Vending (in shops and Bars) Rules, 2003. His counsel, K.K. Kannan pointed out that a similar proposal was dropped last year following large scale protests.
