Special Correspondent

Three-day ritual will begin on July 23 at Exhibition Grounds in city

HYDERABAD: The Tirumala-Tirupati Devasthanams will conduct a three-day ‘Maha Varuna yagam’ at the Exhibition Grounds here from July 23 as a sort of ritualistic appeasement of the rain god in view of the prolonged dry spell dogging the State.

The yagam will be performed by 150 rutwiks (priests) with 115 homa gundams, Mr. K. V. Ramanachary, Executive Officer, TTD, told reporters here on Saturday after getting a nod from Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy that he would participate in the ritual.

The EO also announced that in line with a decision taken by the executive committee, the TTD would distribute textbooks to one lakh girl-students of Intermediate belonging to poorer sections. The Chief Minister would commence the programme by distributing the books to a few students at the Secretariat on July 24. Referring to a controversy raked up by some “vested interests”, Mr Ramanachary said, a proper inventory was being maintained of the properties, jewellery and other valuables of the Tirumala temple . The TTD, however, decided not disclose the details in the best interests of the safety of these properties and valuables.
