HYDERABAD: Sixteen new graveyards and cremation grounds to serve different communities will come up in Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) area shortly. Also, the electric crematoria in Bansilalpet and Amberpet will be replaced with state-of-art equipment. The GHMC has been made the custodian of the cremation grounds/graveyards in its jurisdiction and asked to take up construction of the 16 new ones planned in Serilingampalli, Qutbullapur, Medchal, Shamirpet, Keesara, Ghatkesar, Hayathnagar, Saroornagar, Rajendernagar and Shamshabad areas, each with a compound wall. Facilities reviewedReviewing the facilities available to dispose of bodies here on Saturday in the backdrop of complaints by different communities about the shortage of graveyards, Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy asked Ranga Reddy district Collector to identity the lands for acquisition. Minorities Welfare Minister Mohd Ali Shabbir and GHMC Commissioner C. V. S. K. Sarma told reporters later that out of these 16, 10 would be earmarked for the Hindus and three each to Muslims and Christians. The Minister said the Chief Minister realised the gravity of the problem when he visited Amberpet crematorium during the funeral of Congress MLA P. Janardhan Reddy. He said Punjagutta crematorium/graveyard which surrendered land for road widening had been allotted three acres of land in an adjoining area which would be shared equally by the Hindus and Muslims.
