Hyderabad: Efforts to get Godavari waters to tide over the perennial drinking water crisis facing the State capital has got a boost with Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram indicating his tacit approval for the project. The city could not depend entirely on a single source to quench its thirst. Godavari river should be tapped for meeting the ever increasing needs of Hyderabad, Mr. Chidambaram said.

While inaugurating the Phase II of the Krishna Drinking Water Supply Project at the Sahebnagar Terminal Balancing Reservoir here on Saturday, the Union Minister appreciated the logic and the State government’s keenness to procure Godavari waters. This has bolstered the morale of the HMWSSB which has posed the project to the Centre for funding under JNNURM.

Three phases

Later speaking to presspersons, Board Managing Director G. Asok Kumar, said the Phase I of Godavari Drinking Water Supply Scheme was estimated to cost Rs. 3,375 crore. But with the tremendous increase in cement and steel prices, the project cost would now escalate to Rs. 4,000 crore. Tenders had been called and the technical evaluation going on. The project would be implemented in three phases and the Phase I was expected to be completed by 2011 yielding 120 MGD water. Mr. Asok Kumar said grid improvement works to build additional storage reservoirs under the Krishna phase II project was progressing. The Board was going in for 14 small reservoirs on north and south of Musi for storing the Krishna phase II water.

Earlier, S. Jaipal Reddy, Union Minister for Rural and Urban Development, inaugurated the Krishna phase II inlet II and the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasehkar Reddy, inlet III.
