Looking for CLUES: Policemen outside the cell phone store in Tambaram on Saturday. —

TAMBARAM: More than 100 mobile handsets, reported to be worth a few lakh of rupees, were stolen from a shop on Shanmugham Road in West Tambaram.

G. Sivaloga Raj, a resident of West Tambaram, had locked his store around 10 p.m. on Friday. When he opened the showroom at 10 a.m. on Saturday, he found the showcase almost empty and boxes of mobile handsets strewn on the floor. The shutter of the shop was intact and locks untouched but a hole was drilled in the wall.

In his complaint to the Tambaram police, Mr. Raj said that while the basic models were left untouched, more than 100 high-end expensive models were taken away.

The police put the value of the stolen handsets at about Rs. 7 lakh. In addition, Rs. 9,000 in cash was missing.

The police suspect that the crime was committed by two men by drilling a hole in the outer wall of the showroom after entering the municipality’s Muthurangam Park between midnight and 4 a.m.

Traders who gathered near the showroom were shocked as the crime took place on a ground floor shop of a complex belonging to the Tambaram Municipality. . Pointing out that there were a couple of municipal watchmen on duty and regular police patrolling, they wondered how the crime went unnoticed. In July 2006, a showroom of a popular chain of consumer durable firm on Shanmugham Road, opposite this showroom, was targeted and mobile handsets stolen.
