Call to adopt two-pronged strategy to tide over power crisis

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu State Council of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has urged the State government to adopt a two-pronged strategy to tide over the power crisis.

In a statement issued here on Saturday, Manikam Ramaswami, Chairman, said the government should acknowledge that there was a shortage of power throughout a year during a part of the day or the entire day. There should be equal distribution of the shortage in a planned manner. “There is an immediate need to change over from the present ad hoc multiple daily tripping to a weekly power load shedding, varying from 0 to 24 hour, depending on power shortage so as to minimise the losses caused due to non availability of power,” he said.

He pointed out that the State was emerging as a favourite destination for automobile, information and communication technology and aero space industries.

Another suggestion was that the government should look at some other ways to overcome the shortage and remove the power holiday.

Mr. Ramaswami said many industries in the State could not break if they stopped for 52 days a year and they might need to consider other options. Attracting new investments with only 300 days of power would also become difficult and would slow down the current tempo of investment flow into the State.

The government should purchase from captive power units (diesel/furnace oil generators) to the extent of shortage which varied between 100 MW and 1000 MW.

The government should permit sugar industry to utilise coal for running cogeneration plants during lean months. Now, the plants remained idle when there was no bio-fuel.
