Thousands of cadres take part in protests across the State

CHENNAI: Thousands of cadres took part in the State-wide fast organised by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam on Saturday condemning the killing of Tamil fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy.

They sought the Centre’s intervention to stop the killings.

In Chennai, Electricity Minister and party treasurer Arcot N. Veeraswami led the agitation, inaugurated by Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi.

Education Minister and party general secretary K. Anbazhgan concluded the agitation.

Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin participated in the fast in Rameshwaram.

DMK’s Union Ministers, MPs and State Ministers led the agitations in 10 centres across Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Pudukottai, Tiruchi, Karur and Perambalur districts.

Nagapattinam district, where two fishermen were killed, was the focal point of the agitation. Rajya Sabha member Kanimozhi and local MP A.K.S. Vijayan took part. Protests were also organised at the other three other centres in Tranquebar, Vedaranyam and Poompuhar in the district. In Pudukottai district, the fast was observed in Meemisal and Kottaipattinam.

Higher Education Minister K. Ponmudy led the cadres in Villupuram.

He read out a poem penned by Mr. Karunanidhi expressing anguish over the plight of fishermen.

In Coimbatore, Rural Industries and Animal Husbandry Minister Pongalur Palanisamy led the agitation, attended by former and sitting MPs and MLAs.

In Salem, Agriculture Minister Veerapandi Arumugam demanded a joint operation by the Indian Navy and Coast Guard to prevent “the Sri Lankan Navy from entering into Indian waters and attacking the Tamil fishermen.”

Adi Dravidar Welfare Minister A. Tamilarasi, Madurai Mayor P. G. Thenmozhi, MLAs S.S. Ghouse Basha, P. Moorthi and various others participated in the fast in Madurai.

They expressed hope that the Centre would pay heed to the demand of the Chief Minister and restore the rights of Tamil fishermen in Katchatheevu.
