Shyam shocked

Chennai: R. Premnath defeated top seed Shyam Nikhil to join Navin Kanna in the lead at the end of the eighth round in the SRM Tamil Nadu junior chess championship being played at the SRM University in Kattankulathur near here.

Premnath, 17, who is looking forward to regain the Tamil Nadu junior title he won in 2006 scored in 45 moves by using the Sicilian dragon opening as black.

Premnath and T.U. Navin Kanna (Tvlr) are leading the tournament with 6.5 points. Three rounds remain to be played.

On Saturday, second seed Arun Karthik and top seed Shyam Nikhil lost.

Raghavi posts win

In the girls’ section, former National women’s ‘A’ player, Raghavi scored over Janu with white to join intra-day leader Saranya with seven points from eight rounds

In the morning session, Navin Kanna held on to his half-point lead by holding top seed Shyam Nikhil to a draw with the white pieces. Premnath shocked Grandmaster norm-holder Arun karthik.

Among girls, Saranya took sole lead after round seven posting victory number six to go ahead of Raghavi by half a point.

Shanmuganathan (SRM) 5, K.V. Venprakash (SRM) 5 lost to N. Rajkumar (Che) 6, Muthu Alagappan (Tvlr) 5 lost to S. Ganesh Babu (Mdu) 6.

Girls: J. Saranya (Tvlr) 7 drew with G. Apurva (Kan) 5.5, N. Raghavi 7 bt V. Janu (Tvlr) 5, S. Anushya (NLC) 4.5 lost to R. Visalatchi (Vir) 6, C.H. Savetha (Che) 4.5 lost to S. Harini (SRM) 5.5, A. Sithalatchumi (Mdu) 5 bt R.S. Soundarya (Kar) 4.5.

Round seven: Boys: Navin Kanna drew with Shyam Nikhil, R. Premnath bt Arun Karthik, S. Ganesh Babu drew with Venprakash, Aravind Subramanian lost to Anandh Raj, V.A.V. Rajesh lost to Muthu Alagappan.

Girls: Visalatchi lost to Saranya, Harini drew with Raghavi, P.K. Jayashree lost to G. Apurva, V. Janu bt A. Sithalatchumi.
