THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Neethu Ninan won the girls’ under-19 singles title in the Thiruvananthapuram District badminton championship at the Sri Moolam Club here on Saturday. In the final, Neethu overcame Prija Chandran 16-21, 21-18, 22-20. Top seed Govind Sivan breezed into the quarterfinals in the men’s section after scoring 21-8, 21-8 win over A. Sunil. The second seed Tony Abraham also had it easy in the pre-quarterfinals winning 21-5, 21-6 against S. Sumesh. The results: Men: Singles (pre-quarterfinals): Govind Sivan bt P. Rich haul by DayaDaya Elsa Jacob had a rich haul in the Ernakulam District badminton championship at Kochi on Saturday. Daya, daughter of former State and Railway star Suresh Thomas, won three singles titles — women’s, junior and sub-junior girls — at the Rajiv Gandhi indoor stadium, virtually her home court. Anthony K. Jacob won his maiden district men’s crown defeating K.S. Hersen while international Sanave Thomas and K.A. Anish won the men’s doubles title. Stephy, Smruthi felicitatedKerala’s Stephy Nixon and R.K. Smruthi, both members of the Indian under-16 team which won the girls’ basketball title at the fourth Children of Asia International Sports Games at Yakutsk in Russia last week, were given a warm welcome at the Kollam Railway Station on Friday. The two are trainees at the Kerala Sports Council’s Centralised Sports Hostel in Kollam. Kollam District Collector A. Shajahan and KSC Vice-President K. Thankappan were among those who felicitated the girls at the station. India defeated the host Sakha Republic 98-65 in the final. The team had beaten Thailand and Mongolia in the league phase and Irkutsk 97-53 in the semifinal. Chhattisgarh’s L. Deepa was adjudged the tournament’s best player, while Kavita was named best in the Indian team. Another win for KSEBKSEB defeated Black Arrows 2-0 to record its second consecutive win in the Thiruvananthapuram district super division football league at the Chandrasekharn Nair stadium, Thiruvananthapuram on Saturday. Girish (10th) and Ramesh (50th) scored the goals for the winner. In another match, St. Mary’s FC held Travancore Titanium to a goalless draw. Arun Kumar, Sonia winIn Chennai, U.N. Arun Kumar of Government HSS and P.M. Sonia of St. Anne’s School, both from Kottayam, emerged the boys’ and girls’ 800m winners respectively on the first day of the St. Joseph’s inter-school athletics meet on Saturday. In all 65 schools from Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry are taking part in this mega festival. The results: Boys: 800m: 1. U.N. Arun kumar (Govt. HSS, Kottayam) 2:03.9s; 2. S.
