Workshop on Yakshagana make-up begins Contribution of Raghava Rao to make-up hailed MANGALORE: An eight-day workshop on traditional Yakshagana make-up began on the premises of the Nandaneshwara temple at Panambur here on Sunday. Organised by Panambur Padmanabhaiah Shyanubhog Birth Centenary Committee, the workshop is being conducted in memory of Panambur Raghava Rao, a Yakshagana make-up artiste. P.V. Paramesh, a senior Yakshagana make-up artiste, is conducting the workshop. It will conclude on July 27. Speaking at the inaugural function, M. Prabhakar Joshi, senior Yakshagana artiste and critic, said that there was a need for a change in the costumes of “tenku thittu” school of Yakshagana. The “badagu thittu” school of Yakshagana had its own costume policy, while “tenku thittu” lacked it. Stating that the traditional make-up of “tenku thittu” was facing a threat, Mr. Joshi said that no modern make-up technique could replace the traditional one. Mr. Joshi said: “Make-up, costumes and lighting go hand-in-hand in Yakshagana. Yakshagana is incomplete if any one of these elements is missing.” There was scope for making Yakshagana cartoon films by showcasing the rich make-up and costumes, he said. Mr. Paramesh said that the workshop would cover practical and theory aspects of make-up. Chandrashekar Suvarna of Suvarna Arts, Mulky, recalled the contribution of Raghava Rao to make-up and costumes in Yakshagana.
