Music lovers still remember him as promoter of Hindustani music MYSORE: A musical tribute was paid to Pandit Sreenivasa B. Hungund, who died 11 years ago in Mysore, here on Sunday. Music lovers of Mysore still remember him as promoter of Hindustani music and a selfless teacher of music. Pandit Praveen Godkhindi on bansuri and Pandit Ravindra Yavagal on tabla presented a concert in memory of Hungund at Veene Sheshanna Bhavan in Kuvempunagar here. Sri Rama Kala Vedike organised the concert. Hungund was not a celebrated artiste such as Pandit Mallikarjuna Mansur and Pandit Bheemsen Joshi. He was not a full-time musician too. He retired from Indian Telegraph as a senior superintendent. A press release issued here on Sunday said that Hungund was a critic of Hindustani music, promoter of Hindustani music and a guide to many who were arranging concerts and a selfless teacher of music who was teaching music free to music lovers. Hungund was initiated into Hindustani music by his maternal uncle and later picked up finer aspects of it through interactions with musicians and Pandit Prabhudeva Sardar whom he regarded as his guru, the release said. Though well-versed in vocal music, Hungund became popular as an accompanying artiste on harmonium. He had accompanied many top artistes such as Pandit M.R. Goutham and Pandit Dinkar Kaikini. He was the relative and associate of Pandit Bhemsen Joshi.
