Beneficiaries: The girl children adopted by the State Bank of India, Puducherry. PUDUCHERRY: As part of their Community Services Banking, the six branches of State Bank of India (SBI) in Puducherry adopted 32 girl children from poor families recently. Chief Manager of SBI, Puducherry R. Balaveni said a maximum amount of Rs. 5,000 would be sanctioned per child every year towards educational expenses. The Girl Child Adoption Scheme was introduced last year, she added Under the scheme, all educational expenses for the children would be paid by the bank directly to the school authorities including for uniform and books. Last year, the SBI branches in Puducherry had adopted 12 girl children. Girls in the age group of 4 to 14 years were being adopted under the scheme, she said. “We are also providing Rs. 400 to Rs. 500 every month for living expenses for the girl children,” she said. Apart from this, the bank also provided a loan of Rs. one crore for 52 self-help groups. The bank also distributed furniture to a home for the old-aged and for night classes on the occasion. Finance Officer of Pondicherry University S. Raghavan and officials of the bank took part in the programme.
