Andhra Pradesh
Only a couple of days ago, the Andhra Pradesh Cabinet decided that there would not be power-cuts during night, followed by the Minister’s directions to the official machinery to this effect. But still, power was shut down from 8 30 p.m. to 9.30 p.m. on Friday on account of "emergency load shedding" as per the local authorities. Why do this to the public? The Government could as well have announced directly that due to acute shortage of power, there was no alternative to resorting to a power-cut of three or four hours of duration daily. The Government should not hide from the public the real position of power shortage and announce the steps being taken to meet the power shortage. Further, none should be exempted from this, not even top district officials on the same lines as in the United States and Canada. G.V.S. Lakshmi, Visakhapatnam Provide clean waterIt is observed that some educational institutions are providing water in aluminium vessels and earthen pots, which are unclean. I request the GVMC and District Medical and Health Officer to instruct them and ensure provision of safe drinking water to prevent health hazards. V. Someswara Rao, Visakhapatnam Need for running another EMUThere is need for running another EMU by the East Coast Railway from Srikakulam to Vijayawada and back via Duvvada bypass route as there is no originating train at present from such high-earning station. People are suffering by travelling in general compartments where there is no space to even stand. I appeal to the Railway authorities to introduce the EMU on `humanitarian’ grounds. Paidi Simhachalam, Visakhapatnam Ply bus via railway stationThe APSRTC, Visakhapatnam Region, has done well in utilizing its fleet by diverting from normal route whenever necessary. A fine example is the diversion of buses plying through NGGOs’ Colony near Madhavadhara VUDA Colony to Gitam College on working days and to RK Beach on Sundays and holidays. Similarly, I suggest that a few buses on route 48 A be plied via the Visakhapatnam railway station to serve the public better. M.K. Lakshman, Visakhapatnam Shift the wine shopContrary to guidelines, a wine shop has suddenly come up in Deepalavari Street much to the chagrin of housewives in the residential area. The new liquor shop is only 100 metres from a girls’ high school and a boys’ high school. Besides, there are two churches and a few hospitals just a stone’s throw from this liquor shop. I appeal to the authorities to immediately shift the wine shop to ensure that the residents live in peace. G. Mary Hema Prabha, Kakinada
