This Day That Age
Prominent Lebanese leaders have expressed the apprehension that Lebanon was being turned into an “Anglo-American base” for safeguarding Western interests in the Middle-East despite American protestations that the U.S. troops were there at the invitation of the Lebanese Government and that they would leave the country the moment the Lebanese Government asked them to do so. In cables to President Eisenhower and U.N. Secretary-General, Mr. Hammarskjoeld, two potential candidates for the Presidential election, Mr. Henri Pharaon and Charles Helou urged the withdrawal of the foreign forces which, they said, would “enable the Lebanese themselves to solve their own problems.” Beirut newspapers reported that a group of about 30 deputies had signed a petition protesting against American forces in Lebanon.
