Thrissur: In an attempt to identify fresh talents for the institute’s future projects, the State Institute of Languages, Kerala, conducted a two-day translation training camp at the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi hall here on Sunday. The camp is part of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation’s (UNESCO) International Mother Language Year celebrations. “Regional languages are being neglected in the backdrop of globalisation. Not many new writers are coming into the field of translation,” said P.K. Pokker, Director, State Institute of Languages, Kerala. Translators get less recognition than writers do. This may be the reason for the apathy, Dr. Pokker pointed out. “Language gets enriched only with enormous exchanges among languages.” The State Institute of Languages plans to give more importance to translation. The Centre for Science and Technological Terms, New Delhi, has offered a multi-dimensional translation project to the institute, he said. The camp evoked good response from people of different age groups, said Azeez Tharuvana, camp coordinator. “The ability to understand new trends in other languages is the biggest challenge for a translator,” he pointed out.
