Cuddalore
CUDDALORE: The Federation of All Resident Welfare Associations-Cuddalore has expressed concern over increasing salinity in groundwater in Cuddalore owing to seawater incursion. The Federation has urged the authorities to construct checkdams at the confluence points of the Pennaiyar and the Gedilam and also at Padirikuppam and Koothapakkam (across the Gedilam) to recharge groundwater. It said that indiscriminate sand quarrying in these two rivers had caused water seepage. It wanted the authorities to ban sand quarrying for a distance of six km from the confluence points (with the Bay of Bengal). It also sought quick execution of underground drainage scheme and relaying of damaged roads. The Federation called for speedy completion of the subway on Lawrence Road and formation of pavement from that point to St. Joseph’s School at Khammiampettai.
