Rs.25 lakh to be granted to Shimla Corporation for the drive Forest Department to earmark site for dogs Shimla: The Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) has agreed to issue a grant worth Rs.25 lakh to Shimla Municipal Corporation (SMC) to tackle the menace of stray dogs. SMC Commissioner Amitabha Awasthi said on Sunday that the AWBI has set a target of one year for the corporation to sterilise the stray dog population in the city. He said that Shimla has close to 4,000 stray dogs and the corporation had sterilised more than 50 per cent of these before tagging them. This had resulted in a measure of population control as the number of dogs here had remained the same for a while now. The frequency of dog bites had also reduced marginally. The State Government has also been sanctioned Rs.30 lakh to set up kennels about town, the commissioner said. The forest department has been asked to earmark a site for dogs surrounded by a boundary wall. -- PTI
