PANAJI: There is an urgent need to frame a “media policy on women in the media and projecting women in the media” with the help of experts in the field. This was one of the recommendations made at the end of a two-day regional seminar on “Women in media: fighting stereotype-identity and gender” organised here jointly by the Media Information and Communication Centre of India, the International Centre, Goa, and Friedrich Ebert Stiftung-India. TopicsThe seminar attended by senior journalists, representatives of non-governmental organisations and other experts deliberated on issues ranging from adverse working conditions of women in the media, gender related issues, misrepresentation of women in the media and quality of coverage of women’s issues. RecommendationThe seminar recommended that the Government advertisement policies be linked to coverage of the core issues of women and emphasised the need for doing this through a mechanism to ensure its effective implementation. PleaSuggestions included a plea to the media to play a proactive role and focus on the core issues of women, need to spread awareness and implementation of existing policies at the grassroots level especially in vernacular media.
