Rebati’s father has taken back his complaint against the hospital staff Meanwhile, Rabati’s treatment has been abruptly stopped CUTTACK: Even as the SCB hospital authorities have started taking disciplinary action against the erring staff nurse and a doctor involved in Rebati’s blood sample theft case, demand for CBI enquiry into the shocking incident is gaining ground day by day. “It is appalling that a poor tribal person from a remote place in Boudh district is being utilised by vested interests for their personal benefits”, alleged the city Congress Chief Suresh Mohapatra referring to the FIR filed by Rebati’s father Balakrishna Kahnra and his subsequent request to police not to act upon the FIR. On both the occasions, Rebati’s father was pressurised by two rival groups of the hospital, Mohapatra alleged, adding that the case should be handed over to CBI for a thorough enquiry as the general police are not equipped to handle this sensitive medico-legal case. Condemning the nonchalant attitude of the hospital Superintendent over the entire issue, the city CPM unit head Subash Singh on Sunday demanded that the matter should be immediately handed over to either CBI or State crime branch for enquiry after placing both the accused nurse and doctor under suspension. “Doctors of the hospital, instead of using the rare genetic disorder of the father-daughter duo as guinea pigs, should have focused more on treating the patients to give them a permanent cure”, Singh opined alleging that the doctors of the hospital are engaged more in getting “publicity” than performing their basic duties. Meanwhile, the hospital authorities after sitting over the matter for over three days have started taking action against the erring nurse and doctor. While the nurse Malati Swain is transferred from plastic surgery to Gynaecology Department, Dr. Pratima Sahu of bio-chemistry department has been served a show-cause notice. On the other hand, the local police, who have started investigating into the case after registering a case of theft and criminal conspiracy against the nurse and the doctor, have made little progress. “We are now studying the technical aspects of the case by verifying relevant documents available with the hospital authorities. After that we would record the statements of the accused”, said the Mangalabag police station inspector P.K. Jena. While all these controversies are rocking the hospital, the treatment of Rebati, which is in the mid-way, has been suffering. Dr. Suryakant Narendra, the periodontal plastic surgeon treating her, is now completely disheartened over the recent controversies. Although, Rebati has now come under the scalpel for more than five times, it is not known when her surgical corrections would resume again.
