NEW DELHI: Communist Party of India general secretary A.B. Bardhan has criticising the United Progressive Alliance Government for unleashing a “disinformation campaign” on the Indo-U.S. nuclear deal and taking the public for a ride. Addressing a symposium on the Indo-U.S. nuclear deal here over the weekend, the CPI leader said the Government was claiming that without the nuclear agreement India’s energy security will be in great peril, ignoring the fact that even if the deal was concluded and everything including the supplies go through smoothly, it would at best take care of only about 10 per cent of the country’s energy needs by 2020. Asserting that the country’s energy security could be ensured by tapping solar, wind, coal, water and gas energy sources that the country had in great abundance, Mr. Bardhan said: “India’s coal reserves are enough to meet our energy needs for the next 150 years.” Organised by the Delhi Union of Journalists, Delhi Media Centre for Research Publications and the Committee for Independent Foreign Policy, the symposium was addressed by political leaders, diplomats and strategic affairs specialists. The meeting unanimously passed a resolution that the UPA Government needs to desist from operationalising the deal as it would “compromise on national sovereignty”.
