NEW DELHI: Delhi Metro’s ridership at the Vishwavidyalaya station close to the North Campus has gone up by nearly 23 per cent since colleges reopened on July 16.

According to Delhi Metro Rail Corporation officials, while the average ridership at the station was 27,300 on working days before July 16, it has gone up to 33,500 since the colleges reopened. The revenue earned has also increased by 23 per cent from Rs.3.25 lakh to Rs.4 lakh.

“The Metro smart cards are proving to be quite popular. This number too has increased at the Vishwavidyalaya station. While 138 smart cards used to be sold every day before July 16, this figure now stands at 289. In view of their demand, smart cards are also been sold at all ticket windows of the Vishwavidyalaya station apart from the customer care centres in other stations,” said DMRC Chief Public Relations Officer Anuj Dayal.

On the entire Metro system also, the sale of smart cards per day has increased from 2,820 to 3,572. A total of 10 lakh smart cards are in circulation on the Metro system.

“Bicycles available for hire at the Vishwavidyalaya station have also proved quite a hit with about 40 people hiring them on each working day since July 16. The service, which started with 10 bicycles in October last year, now has 25 bicycles. The hire charges are Rs. 10 for four hours,” Mr. Dayal said.

The average daily ridership on the entire Metro system is 7.26 lakh. According to a commuter survey, 43 per cent of Metro passengers use two or three trains during each trip. This means that the actual train occupancy per day is 10.38 lakh.
