State given less fertilizer: Minister

DAVANGERE: S.A. Ravindranath, Minister for Agriculture, said here on Saturday that the State Government had sought 2,40,000 tonnes of DAP fertilizer from the Centre for June and July, but had been supplied only 1,50,167 tonnes so far.

Karnataka had sought 1,10,000 tonnes of complex fertilizer each for the months of June and July, but the Centre had given only 1,19,774 tonnes for the period.

Mr. Ravindranath told presspersons that there was a shortage of fertilizers in the State.

He said the State Government had been rationing them out to various districts based on their requirements, and districts which were rain-fed and those where sowing was not required to begin in the near future, would not be given fertilizer now.

The Government was committed to ensuring greater supply of fertilizer from the Centre, he said and added that the State Government was discussing the issue with neighbouring States. He promised farmers that they would be given adequate fertilizer, and said that poor rainfall in many districts had created anxiety among them.

The Minister said the Government had ordered completion of work on the modernisation of the Bhadra canal and promised to release the required funds.

He said more projects for Davangere district would be announced in the supplementary budget, but refused to agree that the district was sidelined in the recent budget presented by the Chief Minister.
