Railway staff to form new union

Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A section of group C and D staff in the Thiruvananthapuram Railway Division, owing allegiance to the Southern Railway Mazdoor Union (SRMU), has decided to form a new union.

They had earlier set up the ‘Save SRMU Forum’ following bickering in the SRMU.

The decision to form a new registered trade union ‘to ensure transparency, democracy and proper trade union activity’ was taken at a meeting of the forum held in Kollam on Friday.

The internal strife in the SRMU following Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) raids on the residence of union divisional secretary C.S. Prasanna Kumar had led to the setting up of the forum.

Mr. Kumar, a travelling ticket examiner (TTE) attached to Thiruvananthapuram Central, had proceeded on leave for two months following the raids. Mr. Kumar had removed assistant divisional secretaries R. Ramesh, Arson Daniel and Anil Kumar. This aggravated the situation in the SRMU, sources said. Some employees who had formed the Save SRMU Forum have decided to join the CITU-affiliated Dakshin Railway Employees’ Union (DREU).

The SRMU and the DREU had obtained the ‘General Manager Recognised Trade Union’ status by bagging 30 per cent votes in a referendum held in November last.

“Even if a section of cadres from the Save SRMU Forum decides to join the DREU, the new trade union will be set up within one or two months. We are taking steps in this regard,” an SRMU leader said.
