MADURAI: Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin launched ‘My Town, My Pride’ awareness campaign in town panchayats benefited by Anaithu Peruratchi Anna Marumalarchi Thittam (APAMT) here on Sunday. All town panchayats in the State will be covered under the scheme in phases. The campaign, which lays stress on involvement of people in the upkeep of their localities, will be implemented across the State with the help of citizens groups. Mr.Stalin said that this would also bring local officials and elected representatives closer to the people. The enhanced interaction would also mean that the issues are addressed in a timely and effective manner. “Madurai is the first district in the State where the campaign for clean and green towns is launched,” District Assistant Director, Town Panchayat, M. Jeganathan, said. Mr. Stalin gave away T-shirts, caps and badges to students that would instil a sense of pride among residents to keep it clean and green. He released stickers that would be pasted on the doors of all houses. “We will give T-shirts, caps and badges to over 100 national service scheme volunteers among school students in each town panchayat,” Mr. Jeganathan said. Tirunagar, Alanganallur and Palamedu towns had been selected for the scheme this year. Each town would get over Rs. 50 lakh. A total of Rs. 27 crore was spent for the overall development of the towns.
