Though Kavundampalayam Municipality maintains that water is supplied once in nine days, in reality we are getting drinking water only once in 15 days. We have not seen water in our taps for the last 15 days. Drinking water that is stored for long periods gets contaminated and spreads diseases. Previously we used to get brackish bore well water once in four days for other use. Nowadays this is supplied once in 12 or 13 days. It is regrettable to note that the Municipal authorities are providing misinformation to the public. S.Mariappan, Kavundampalayam Tax collectionUnprecedented developmental activities have rendered linear expansion almost impossible. The concept of building multi-storey apartments has been gradually gaining ground in almost all major cities. No wonder several of them have sprung up in Coimbatore too. Everything points to the fact that this is going to be a regular feature. There being no well-defined rule in existence for stipulating that flats in the apartments should be exclusively used for residential or commercial purposes, we find the co-existence of residences and offices/commercial establishments in several apartments. In such cases, there is absolute need for the local administration to be pragmatic in its approach in regard to the levy of property tax and water/electricity charges. Simply because some of the flats in an apartment are utilised for official/ commercial purposes, commercial tariffs should not be blindly made applicable to all the flats. This will amount to punishing the innocents. The civic authorities should confine collecting taxes at commercial rates to the flats actually used for non-residential purposes. While separate meters are available in all flats for recording electricity consumption, this facility is not available for recording the quantum of water-consumption in each flat. The owners of the flats that are put to commercial use can be directed to install sub-meters for this purpose, their readings taken separately and the figure deducted from the total units consumed by the entire apartment. By adopting this method, the prevailing unjust practice of levying charges at commercial rates for the entire consumption can be put an end to. It is justified relief all the owners of residential flats badly need. Will the civic authorities give serious thought to this grave problem and initiate effective measures for solving it? K.D.Viswanaathan, Thadagam Road Power cutThe unannounced power cut that prevails now has exceeded the limits. The daytime frequent power cuts have sabotaged the industrial scene of Coimbatore to an extent. The night time power cut is spoiling the health and education as a whole. In our area, the power cut schedule begins at 5 a.m. If only this is moved to 6 a.m., when sunlight begins to show there will be no problem. People and students can adjust themselves. But at 5 am, it is quite impossible to study or do anything else. I request the authorities to take proper action or announce the timings of power cut.
