TIRUCHI: The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) strength at the Tiruchi Airport has been augmented, paving way for introduction of additional flights to the city and more night operations. According to sources in the airport, the CISF headquarters has increased the sanctioned strength of the unit to 113 now. Orders have been issued posting 37 men, including a couple of Inspectors, to the airport already. ith an existing strength of just 57 men, the CISF unit at the airport was hampered by a severe manpower constraint and was unable to provide security cover round-the-clock for flight operations. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) had to restrict operations during the night hours and air operators have been complaining that they were unable to operate flights to a schedule of their choice. The absence of domestic services in the evenings was also cited as a reason for the delay in the setting up of the Information Technology Park in the city.
The immediate outcome, airport officials expect, would be the introduction of an evening service on the Chennai-Tiruchi-Chennai sector by the Paramount Airways. Its managing director M. Thiagarajan had already gone on record that the airline would introduce the evening flight as soon as the CISF manpower shortage was overcome.
