KOLKATA: Candlelight rallies were held by women activists of the Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM) in Darjeeling district of West Bengal on Sunday to urge the local Congress MP to cast his vote during the July 22 trust vote in the Lok Sabha “keeping in mind the interest of the Gorkhaland movement.” The GJM has been demanding the creation of Gorkhaland to be carved out of Darjeeling district and certain areas contiguous to it. GJM president Bimal Gurung earlier spoke to MP Dawa Norbula, asking him to get a commitment from the Congress leadership on the statehood before casting his vote. “Mr. Norbula has been asked to vote according to his conscience keeping in mind the interest of Gorkhaland,” GJM general secretary Roshan Giri told The Hindu over telephone from Darjeeling district. “Mr. Norbula is the public representative of Darjeeling and should keep in mind the aspirations of the local people. They are united in their demand for a separate Gorkhaland,” Mr. Giri said.
