Arun and Navin Kanna share lead

Arvind Aaron

Saranya leads the girls’ section with 8.5 points

Chennai: Second seed Arun Karthik recorded two wins on the penultimate day to catch up with leader Navin Kanna with eight points from ten games in the FIDE-rated Tamil Nadu junior chess championship at SRM University on Sunday.

Grand Master Arun Karthik (SRM) who recently won the CUSAT FIDE-rating Open at Kochi plays top seed Shyam Nikhil in the final round on Monday while Navin Kanna has a comparatively easier opponent to take on.

Arun Karthik and third seed Navin Kanna lead with eight points while Shyam Nikhil is in clear third position with 7.5 points. “I was lucky on move 13 when Anandh Raj overlooked a tactic to win two pawns,” said Arun Karthik. Riding his luck, Arun had counterplay for the pawn and won in 28 moves with the white pieces in a French classical opening.

J. Saranya of Velammal School, Chennai, shot into sole lead again by trapping Khushboo’s knight with the pawn to register a 47-move win.

Saranya leads the girls’ section with 8.5 points and Raghavi, who was held to a fighting 46-move draw by perpetual check, is in second place on eight points.

In the morning session, Navin Kanna swung back into lead midway through Sunday when he beat overnight joint leader Premnath with white pieces.

In the girls’ section, there was no separating Raghavi and Saranya from the lead as both players drew to move from seven to 7.5 points.
