Police protection for Brahmapuram plant sought

Staff Reporter

Miscreants destroy gate, staff threatened

Proposals for construction of RDF plant being received

Fuel pellets are in great demand

KOCHI: The Kochi Corporation has approached the district administration and the police authorities seeking protection for the Brahmapuram municipal solid waste treatment plant. This was following the destruction of a gate of the plant and demolition of a board of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission situated near the campus by some miscreants.

The issue was brought to the attention of the district authorities and the Corporation officials were directed to lodge a complaint with the police, the Mayor Mercy Williams said.

The staff of the Andhra Pradesh Technology Development Corporation (APTDC) have also complained to the civic authorities that they were working under stressful conditions following threat from some sections of the people.

The APTDC staff raised the issue in a recent meeting with the Kochi Corporation authorities, the Mayor said.

Considering the threat perspective, the Corporation was forced to seek police protection, she said.

On the complaint raised by some of the residents of the area about leachate leakage from the plant, Ms. Williams said the Corporation had directed the APTDC authorities to construct two more tanks to collect the leachate.

The increase in volume of leachate was due to the increased humidity following the monsoon showers. The increased water content in the waste that reaches the plant also contributes to the increased volume of leachate, she said.

RDF plant

The Kochi Corporation has started receiving proposals for erecting the machinery for the Refuse Derived Fuel plant at Brahmapuram.

The civic body had earlier invited Expression of Interest (EOI) for the project.

The last date for submitting the EOI is July 27, said the Mayor.

The Corporation hopes to set up the RDF plant with an installed capacity of processing 250 tonnes of non-degradable waste.

225 lakh pellets

The fuel pellet production capacity of the plant would be 225 lakh pellets per day, said Mini Antony, secretary of the Corporation.

The Corporation has earmarked Rs. 5.4 crore for the RDF plant.

The fuel pellets are of great demand in industries like cement manufacturing units and the sale of the pellets are expected to generate considerable revenue for the Corporation besides solving the garbage menace to a considerable extent.
