KOCHI: Minister for Cooperation, G. Sudhakaran has promised Rs. 10 crore grant annually for the proper functioning of the Cooperative Medical College at Kalamassery. Taking part in a panel discussion after the seminar on medical education held in connection with the graduation ceremony and declaration of the permanent recognition for the College from the Union Health Ministry, Mr. Sudhakaran said that more super-specialties will be added to the college hospital soon and post-graduate courses in gynaecology, surgery, orthopaedics and general medicine will be started from the next academic year. The Minister also said that wages of doctors and other staff at the hospital will be revised upwards besides providing more security personnel at the college hospital. M. M. Monayee, MLA, inaugurated the seminar. Gopalan Master, chairman of Kerala State Cooperative Hospital Complex and Centre for Advanced Medical Studies, gave the keynote address. Others who participated in the function include P. K. Sivakumar, Director, Cooperative Academy of Professional Education, Dr. Rani Nair, chief Medical Advisor, CAPE and other dignitaries. Earlier on Saturday, the Minister said the government would implement a proposal aimed at ensuring the overall development of the Co-operative Medical College. Explaining that the college had a debt of Rs. 56 crore, Mr. Sudhakaran said that it could be run without loss, if the government had provided Rs. 10 crore a year. The college has got 500 beds but the occupancy is only about 100. He said that the college was located in 60 acres lying close to the proposed Cyber City and SmartCity projects. The Minister also requested the cooperation of the hospital staff and the local public to ensure the smooth functioning of the medical college. S. Sarma, Minister for Fisheries, launched the official website of the college on the occasion. A. M. Yousuf, MLA, presided. Gangan Prathap, vice chancellor of Cochin University of Science and Technology, and V. M. Arifa, Chairperson of Kalamassery Municipality, spoke.
