S. Anil Radhakrishnan

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Taking advantage of the heavy demand for tickets to the Gulf during the time of reopening of educational institutions in the UAE and also the forthcoming Onam festival, various airlines have hiked fares by 100 to 190 per cent in the August 15-September 15 peak season.

The revised fares have been made available on the reservation system and the airlines have started selling tickets. Among the Gulf countries, seats to the United Arab Emirates, especially Dubai, are the most sought after from the three airports of the State.

“The fares to the Gulf destinations during the peak season have been hiked arbitrarily. The fares may go up to Rs.30,000 once the demand for seats increase in the coming days,” airline sources said.

Fuel surcharge

The hike in the fuel surcharge on account of the increase in the price of Aviation Turbine Fuel has also come as another shock to the passengers bound for the Gulf countries.

In addition to the fares, a passenger from Thiruvananthapuram to Dubai will have to shell out Rs.3,385 as tax.

The airlines have hiked these fares by 100 to 190 per cent. The highest fare in the Thiruvananthapuram-Dubai sector during the peak season beginning on August 15 will be Rs.17,035 on an Air India flight and Rs.25,525 on Emirates.

In the Thiruvananthapuram-Muscat sector, the fare on Oman Air will be Rs.11,040 and Rs.21,525 on Emirates. In the Thiruvananthapuram-Bahrain sector, the fare charged by Qatar Airways will be Rs.25,011.

The fare on Emirates in the Thiruvananthapuram-Doha sector will be Rs.21,525 and that on Gulf Air, Rs.17,640.

For August 25, the highest fare on an AIE flight from here to Dubai is Rs.11,884 and lowest fare Rs.9,235.

In the Thiruvananthapuram-Sharjah sector, the highest fare on an AIE flight is Rs.14,385 and the lowest is Rs.11,035.

The national carrier has also not introduced peak season fares for Dammam and Riyadh, sources said.
