This Day That Age
Mr. Selwyn Lloyd, British Foreign Secretary, said on leaving Washington on July 20 for New York and London that Britain and the U.S. were “completely agreed” as to Middle East policy. Mr. Lloyd told reporters that he could not discuss the proposal by Mr. Nikita Khrushchev, the Soviet Prime Minister, for an immediate Summit conference on the Middle Eastern crisis, until he had consulted with Mr. Harold Macmillan, the British Prime Minister and his other colleagues. Mr. Lloyd said, however, that he had discussed the proposal with Mr. John Foster Dulles, the Secretary of State. Asked if they were in substantial agreement on their reaction, Mr. Lloyd replied: “I think we are in substantial agreement.”
