This Day That Age
The Government of India have decided to recognise the new regime in Iraq. An official announcement may be expected in a couple of days, as soon as necessary formalities are gone through. Opinion in uncommitted nations seems to have been exercised over India’s delay in according recognition to the new Iraqi Government. It has been represented to India that the real object behind the Anglo-American military intervention in the Lebanon and Jordan is to suppress the military revolt in Iraq and that the present lull is due to the fact that details of the plan for the assault are being worked out. It has been urged that oil is the main issue involved in the dispute and that the Western Powers apprehended that the collapse of the feudal overlordship in Iraq, if left uncountered, would encourage similar exploits in other kingdoms which control the oil wealth in the region.
