SALEM: The laptop exhibition organised by the Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu (ELCOT) in Salem and Namakkal districts on Saturday attracted a large number of school and college students.

The exhibition was conducted as a part of the student laptop scheme of the ELCOT. Collector N. Mathivanan inaugurated the exhibition in Salem.

In Namakkal, Collector U. Sagayam opened the fair.

ELCOT officials allowed the students to operate and test the performance of the laptops, which would be made available at heavily discounted rates, almost 40 per cent less than the market price to the students under the scheme. These laptop computers come with three year comprehensive international warranty (except battery).

The laptops come pre-loaded with state-of-the-art Suse Linux Enterprise Desktop operating system. For visually challenged students, ELCOT will load Ubuntu Linux operating system with ORCA accessibility application.

The laptops have been bundled with a variety of open source software packages, including OpenOffice, software development tools, databases such as PostgreSQL and MySQL, all of which were tested for various parameters by the ELCOT. The Java/JSP/J2EE/C++ software development can be commenced without any additional configuration.

The Linux operating system in the Student laptop also has free virtualisation software called ‘virtual box’.

The project is aimed at providing about one lakh laptops to the students studying in colleges and schools in Tamil Nadu.

Students can register online www.elcot.in to purchase the laptops. The last date for registration is July 31.
