Thiruvananthapuram: The strike call by the pro-Left Action Council of State Employees and Teachers and other organisations, to protest against the death of a school Headmaster in Malappuram, affected the functioning of government offices and schools in the State on Monday. Members of the protesting unions took out demonstrations in a number of places. The action council urged those agitating against the class VII textbook to withdraw ‘their anti-people agitation which had made the education sector restive.’ The NGO Union said in a press release that the agitators were resorting to violence as their stir lacked the support of the people. They were unleashing violence against teachers. Such steps would not succeed in defeating the progressive steps in the education sector, the NGO Union said. The All Kerala Private College Teachers’ Association and the Association of Kerala Government College Teachers were among the teachers organisations which had joined the strike. Functioning of professional colleges was also hit.
