Left workers, police clash in Assam

Sushanta Talukdar

Guwahati: Hundreds of workers of the Left parties clashed with the police as they were prevented from taking out a procession to protest against the India-U.S. nuclear deal and the price hike.

The police cordoned off the venue and prevented the workers from taking out the procession.

The workers, led by CPI(M) leaders Uddhab Barman, Hemen Das, CPI leaders Promode Gogoi, Drupad Borgohain, RSP leader Paresh Barua and CPI(ML) leader Naren Bora, however, broke the security cordon on the District Library premises here.

The police closed the library’s main gate in a bid to prevent the workers from leaving.

Earlier, addressing a public meeting, the Left leaders urged the people of Assam to join the country in opposing the nuclear deal and to foil attempts by the UPA government to push the deal.

They also accused the Congress-led UPA of indulging in horse trading to survive the trust vote in Parliament.
