Decks cleared for automatic meter readers
Special Correspondent
Hyderabad: A court case has held up the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board’s plans to install Automatic Meter Readers (AMR) to monitor the consumption, water flow and billing pattern for high volume industrial consumers in Patancheru area.
The Board recently awarded the contract on BOOT (Build-Own-Operate-Transfer) basis to Mantech Constructions through a tender process. But another agency has gone to court contending that it is the lowest bidder. The Board is waiting for clearance of the legal hurdle for implementing the project.
The upcoming technology enables reading of water meters remotely without one having to go to the place where the meter is located. The AMR is proposed to be introduced on an experimental basis for 150 industrial connections in Patencheru area which account for revenue of Rs. 4 crore per month. The state of the art technology will enable accurate measurement of water supplied and result in improved billing, it is said. The project at Patencheru is spread over 40 sq. km where manual reading of meters is both cumbersome and time consuming.
