Project to cleanse Hussainsagar lake to go on steam
|
HYDERABAD: The long pending restoration of Hussainsagar Lake project will go on steam with construction of a 30 MLD tertiary sewage treatment plant in a fortnight, Hyderabad Urban Development Authority (HUDA) Chief Engineer Vivek Deshmukh said here on Monday. The plant would come up at Picket nala.
As part of the lake restoration plans, the existing 10 MLD STP near IMAX traffic island would be upgraded to 20 MLD STP. The diversion and interception of inlets into the lake would also be finalised in a month, he said.
“By 2011, the quality of water in Hussainsagar Lake would be improved,” Mr. Deshmukh said.
Giving details about HUDA’s international workshop on ‘Sustainability of Lake Remediation and Interventions’ to mediapersons, Mr. Deshmukh said the four-day workshop would be organised in collaboration with Japan International Cooperation Agency from Tuesday.
The workshop would focus on measures and restoration of urban lakes with a special focus on Hussainsagar Lake. Seven international speakers, including Nobel laureate C.H.D Magadza from Zimbabwe, would participate. There are over 400 lakes and water bodies in and around the city of which 169 lakes were notified by the HUDA. Of the 169 lakes, 87 were found prone to encroachments and pollution.
