MSEZ officer booked for ‘atrocity on SC/ST’

MANGALORE: Urwa police have registered a case under SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act against the Chief Operating Officer of Mangalore Special Economic Zone (MSEZ) Ltd A.G. Pai here on Monday. his follows a complaint from Krishnappa, resident of Bajpe, who has accused Mr. Pai of insulting him and his accomplices when they went to the MSEZ office at Urwa Stores s Mangalore East Circle Police Inspector M.K. Ganapathy told The Hindu that a group of people led by Mr. Krishnappa, had gone to the MSEZ office at around 12.30 p.m., when Mr. Pai allegedly abused and threatened them. The group, subsequently, lodged a complaint with the Urwa police,

Mr. Ganapathy said. Mr. Pai, when contacted over phone about the incidents, said that he was not ready to discuss the details of the case over telephone. .

Protest

Later in the day, Krishi Bhumi Samrakshana Samiti and Karnataka Karavali Janabhivrudhdhi Veedike staged a protest against the MSEZL in front of its office, saying that it would create a “foreign territory on Indian soil”.

They said that the MSEZL had, through newspaper advertisements, made it clear that it would establish a duty-free enclave which would be treated as a foreign territory for the purpose of trade operations in the hassle-free ambience.

Madhukar Ameen advocate and chairman of the samiti, said that fertile lands were being acquired for MSEZL claiming them to be barren lands.
