MANGALORE: Impelled by the volatility of financial markets, the city’s money-bees made a beeline for the St. Aloysius College on Saturday for a seminar on “Investing in challenging times”. But according Gerard Colaco, investing is a “simple proposition driven by the dent of logic and peppered by common sense.” Mr. Colaco, chartered accountant and financial advisor, said: “There is some perverse human nature that likes to make simple things difficult.” The best investors were always planning damage control. Financial planning was like preventive medicine. It was all about taking measures in advance, he said. Mr. Colaco said that people who look at investments as a short term affair were indulging in nothing but gambling. According to him, the stock markets go into a slump and recover again in cycles of five years and real estate in cycles of 10 years. Advising against investing in gold, he said that real estate and stocks were the only time- tested investments that beat inflation over time. “Appreciation in the value of gold and other bullion will always mimic the rising inflation,” he said and added that inflation would mean depreciation in the value of money.
