Clothes worth lakhs gutted
Staff Reporter
NEW DELHI: A major fire broke out in a multi-storey saris and garments store, Novelty Emporium, in Chandni Chowk here on Monday. Though no one sustained injuries, cloth worth several lakhs was gutted.
Smoke suddenly started emanating from an air-conditioner on the top floor around noon triggering panic among the 50-odd employees inside the garments store. In no time the smoke spread to the first and ground floors of the store forcing the employees to rush out.
Several hosiery and garments stores in the area also pulled down their shutters fearing that the fire might spread.
“When I saw smoke billowing out of the emporium, I pulled down the shutter and rushed out. Around 50 shops on both sides of the emporium were closed and business resumed only in the afternoon,” said Padamsen Jain, owner of “Shakti Store” in the vicinity of the five-decade-old Novelty Emporium.
Fourteen fire tenders took over two hours to douse the flames that later spread to the adjoining United Bank of India building forcing evacuation.
